Length of legislation in Australia January 23rd, 2006
A Club for Growth chart on laws passed in the US per year (which clearly illustrates a spike in election years) has reminded me of these Australian statistics, on the average length of Commonwealth legislation over the past century:

At first glance, it shows that there is no significant link between Labor and Liberal Governments in terms of their attitude to passing legislation - It’s a pretty much continuous upwards trend whether the Labor Party or Liberal Party is in government!

Good graphs. I noticed that HR Block was advertising that you get a scratch off and win prize when you get your tax done. We can thank software for commoditising that industry and hiding the abnormal complexity of tax regulation that government has foistered on the population.

Christian - that isn’t actually a ringing endorsement of the labor party either!
Cam - I know a lot of people trace the problem back to the invention of the photocopier and its use in ministerial and legal offices.
