Summary: Australian policymakers want artificial-intelligence sovereignty, data sovereignty and domestic compute capacity. These goals require data centres. Treating data centres as a novel feature of the AI industry invites poor regulation: they are general-purpose industrial infrastructure supporting banking, government records, health systems, logistics, streaming and AI workloads. Directing moral panic about AI at this visible and immobile infrastructure risks entrenching incumbents, inviting rent seeking and weakening the sovereign compute capacity policymakers seek to build.
